A You should put a liner on at least the base (but with holes lined up with the drainage holes). A liner on the inside may help prevent the soil drying out. You might consider spraying the inside and outside with apple cider vinegar to inhibit growth of fungus. Advice is mixed on whether you need to varnish it.
A Whether or not to line your barrel with plastic is entirely up to you. Many people feel that a liner significantly extends a barrel's life -- though how much is questionable. One way or another, if your barrel is solid oak, it should last for a good long time.
A about 10 years I'd say that a whiskey barrel exposed to the elements lasts as a plant container for about 10 years at most. My idea was to make them pretty and decorative, and hopefully prolong the deterioration of the wood.
About Barrel Planter
A barrel planter is a decorative and functional gardening container made from a wooden or metal barrel. These planters are popular for their rustic aesthetic and versatility in gardening. Here are some key points about barrel planters:
Material: Traditionally made from wood, often oak, but can also be found in metal or plastic. Wooden barrels may have a natural look, while metal options can be painted or treated for durability.
Drainage: Good drainage is crucial for plant health. Many barrel planters have drainage holes added if they don't already exist.
Planting Options: They can hold a variety of plants, including flowers, herbs, and vegetables. The size and shape of the barrel allow for creative arrangements.
Placement: They can be placed on patios, decks, or in gardens, serving as focal points or accents in outdoor spaces.
Maintenance: Wooden barrels may require maintenance to prevent rot, while metal barrels may need rust prevention treatments.
Repurposing: Old barrels can often be repurposed for gardening, making them an eco-friendly option.
Seasonal Interest: They can be used year-round by rotating plants according to the seasons, providing continual visual interest.
